How Can Dairy Producers Reduce Methane? A Climate Investment Dilemma Across Global Dairy Systems

by Andrew Isaacs and Aurélia Heitz

In 2026, a European food company committed to reducing methane emissions faced the challenge of how to reduce emissions from its dairy business. An IPCC report stated that sustained reductions in methane emissions could ‘limit near-term warming and improve air quality by reducing global surface ozone.’ Compared to carbon dioxide, methane has a much shorter atmospheric lifetime but a significantly higher warming impact in the near term. Reducing methane emissions offered one of the fastest ways to demonstrate near-term climate progress. With limited capital and resources, where could the global company drive the greatest reduction in dairy methane emissions?

Learning Objectives

1. Capital allocation: where to invest limited climate capital across structurally different systems.

2. Measurement as a strategic constraint: how data and verification limits shape financeable interventions.

3. Speed vs. scale tradeoff: near-term measurable gains (US) vs. long-term high-impact uncertainty (India).

4. Transferable decision framework: generalizing dairy-specific criteria to other Scope 3 supply-chain problems.
