Cannabusiness in Washington D.C.
de Figueiredo, Rui J.P., Jamaur Bronner, Mohsin Alvi, and Deena Malaeb
Publication date: 10/1/2016, pages 1-27

The cannabusiness case focuses on entrepreneur Corey Barnette, owner of cultivation center District Growers and dispensary Metropolitan Wellness Center, two partially vertically integrated cannabis businesses. The study examines the challenges facing a business owner in a new, highly regulated market, including finding access to capital, making compliance investments, and building political connections. It also explores how the "War on Drugs" led to an uneven playing ground for minorities wishing to be a part of the legal cannabis industry. Barnette, an African-American, overcame the barriers to entry. Now, he must evaluate how to more effectively compete within DC and beyond.
