Better Ventures: Backing Entrepreneurs Building a Better World (B)
Walske, Jennifer , and Laura D'Andrea Tyson
Publication date: 10/1/2025, pages 1-9

This is a two-part case study. Part A covers Better Ventures seeking to raise $20 million for its first standalone fund between 2014 and 2016. Based in Oakland, California, the co-founders built experience in impact investing by managing Hub Ventures. Encouraged by the economic return and social impact from those early-stage, mission-driven investments, they hoped to raise a separate and larger fund: Better Ventures II. Part B revisits BV in 2025 discussing the ongoing challenges of raising capital. Students will evaluate BV's continued focus on impact investing in a changing global and political climate as it plans to raise a new fund in 2026.
