Global Strategies and NoviGuide: Options for Scaling an Innovative Global Health Technology

by Colin Boyle

Dr. Joshua Bress, President of Global Strategies, understands his nonprofit’s mission firsthand having worked as a pediatrician in eastern Congo where the infant mortality rate is the highest in the world. Global Strategies designed an easy-to-use, tablet-based software to help nurses in low-income countries deliver consistent and high-quality newborn care that matches evidence-based pediatric clinical guidelines. Its new NoviGuide achieved better health outcomes and also attracted other health organizations interested in licensing or acquiring NoviGuide for additional applications. In 2024, Global Strategies considered how its nonprofit could navigate the myriad options that the success of its software had unexpectedly created.

Many nonprofits develop successful pilot products or services but are unable to reach scale. The case explores different organizational and collaboration models that such organizations might consider to achieve their goals, and weighs their respective pros, cons, and risks. It also describes what the requirements (skills, resources, alignment with partners) to make those models successful.
